About Cal State LA

California State University, Los Angeles was established in 1947 in the western San Gabriel Valley. The campus is located just five miles east of downtown Los Angeles and its freeway access makes it easily reached from many Southern California communities.

California State University, Los Angeles is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Programs in the Charter College of Education are accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The Urban Learning Program was developed in 2000 in response to the need for elementary and special education teachers appropriately prepared to teach in highly diverse urban schools.  It is the only undergraduate degree major of its kind in the State of California.  In addition to preparing culturally sensitive educators for elementary school classrooms, it prepares special education teachers across a range of disability specialization.
