June 12 – Film: ASSATA: The Eyes of the Rainbow - ANSWER Office 7:00pm @ The ANSWER Office, 135 E. 3rd St (Between Main & Los Angeles) Downtown LA “Eyes of the Rainbow” portrays the life of Assata Shakur, the Black Panther and Black liberation leader who escaped from prison. Assata was given political asylum in Cuba, where she has lived for close to 15 years. She is still being persecuted by the FBI for a crime she did not commit, and was recently put on the “Most Wanted Terrorist List.” Come learn the truth about Assata Shakur's story, and get involved in the movement to keep the U.S. government's hands off of her. Los Angeles Web Address: http://www.caamuseum.org FILMS AT CAAM A CELEBRATION OF BLACK MUSIC MONTH: Music of the African Diaspora Marley (2012, runtime 144 min): Ziggy Marley, son of Bob Marley, serves as this documentary’s executive producer. Marley was made with the unprecedented support of the Marley family and features rare footage, archival photos and energetic performances of Marley with his band, The Wailers. It also includes in-depth interviews with Marley’s family, friends and band members. This event is free and open to the public. June 15 - Art Workshop: Painting the Orishas - California African American Museum Visual artist Lili Bernard will facilitate a workshop on Afro-Cuban religion and folklore. Participants will engage in creative exercises and interactive play involving the painting of symbols on made objects associated with various Orishas. This event is free and open to the public. Community Events Cont...June 27 - Fela: Music is the Weapon - California African American Museum Fela: Music is the Weapon (1984) Filmed in Lagos, Nigeria in 1982, this documentary combines footage of Fela Kuti performing at his famous Shrine nightclub, interviews with the controversial musician, glimpses of life in his compound and scenes of Lagos street life.
