| CAL STATE L.A. PRESS CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS A press conference announcing the release of the First Annual PBI State of Immigration Report is scheduled for Monday, February 12, 1:30-2 p.m., at California State University, Los Angeles in the University-Student Union, Los Angeles Room. Noted urban geographer Ali Modarres, professor of geography and associate director for the Edmund G. "Pat" Brown Institute of Public Affairs (PBI) at Cal State L.A. will be offering remarks on the report, which covers national immigration patterns. Providing detailed analysis of social, demographic and spatial characteristics of immigration since 1990, Dr. Modarres' report emphasizes California and Los Angeles data and highlights Asian immigration. Following the press conference, the PBI will host "Census 2000: Accessing and Assessing the Data." Reina Ornelas and Susan Ng, partner specialists of U.S. Bureau of the Census, will explain what is available in the Census data and how to access the databases, reports and maps that are available on CD-ROMs, printouts and on the Census Web site. (Complete data from the 2000 Census will be available April 1, 2001.) Following the presentation Ms. Ornelas and Ms. Ng will be joined by a panel of immigration, housing, and redistricting experts. The panel, moderated by Dr. Modarres, will include housing policy specialist Bill Pitkin, a research associate at the UCLA Advanced Policy Institute, and Alan Clayton, an expert in redistricting. Together, they will assess the value and uses of the most recent Census data and will respond to questions and discussion from the audience. The event will provide a unique experience for community organizers, service providers, business leaders, researchers and any individuals interested in recent demographic changes. Reservations are suggested. For reservations or for parking information, call the Pat Brown Institute (323) 343-3770.
