Cal State L.A. Announces the Winners of its
12th Annual Chinese Poetry Recitation Contest

Los Angeles, CA – The following are winners of the 12th Annual Chinese Poetry Recitation Contest at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA):

Advanced Level:
1st: Jinyu Mao, CSULA (Rosemead resident)
2nd: Chung Yin Fan, CSULA (Monterey Park)
3rd: Ching Shih, CSULA (Rowland Heights)
3rd: Li-Chuan Chiu, CSULA (San Gabriel)

Intermediate Level:
1st: Henry Chen, CSULA (Los Angeles)
2nd: Ping Fung Wu, CSULA (Arcadia)
3rd: Kattie Tran, CSULA (Rosemead)
3rd: Xuchu Mai, CSULA (Alhambra)

Elementary Level:
1st: Pong Chy, CSULA (Los Angeles resident)
2nd: Bruce Huang, CSULA (Cerritos)
3rd: Trinh Ly, CSULA (Alhambra)

Special (Non-native Speakers) Category:

Additionally, Chinese B.A. Scholarship was awarded to Christina Ng (Monterey Park resident) and Kylie Hsu Scholarships were awarded to Kattie Tran (Rosemead resident) and Hon Ming Wong (Alhambra resident).

The contest was organized in order to stimulate a wider interest in Chinese studies and to promote academic Chinese learning within the American Chinese community. In total, there were four first prizes, four second prizes and eight third prizes awarded. Each entrant recited two poems in their corresponding level (elementary, intermediate or advanced Mandarin, or English native speakers without a Chinese background). Recitations were judged on the basis of pronunciation and intonation, tone, emotion and expression, and manner. The contest was open to Cal State L.A. students and students from any California college or university.

This poetry contest was made possible through the donation of Major Tsai, president of Ideal Realty, and Monique Wu, president of the Association for Chinese Cultural and Ethical Education in America, and was sponsored by the Chinese Studies Center and the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Cal State L.A.
