| Cal State L.A. Students Garner Awards California State University, Los Angeles broadcasting students Van Pham (Los Angeles resident) and Heather Nichols (Carson resident) are among this yearÂs CSU Summer Arts Media Arts Festival Rosebud Award winners. The festival, held each year, showcases the very best in student film and video from all of the CSU systemÂs 23 campuses. Van Pham won the first place award in the "Best in Show" category for his work, entitled A Different Corner. PhamÂs winning entry, produced during Spring-Fall 2001 under film professor Alan Bloom, also received a first place award in the "Best Documentary" category. Heather Nichols took home the first place award in the "Media in Community Service" category for her public service announcement, In Your Face, about the hazards of smoking. Nichols produced her winning entry this past year in a cinematography class with assistant professor Blake Jackson. At this yearÂs festival, Cal State L.A.Âs professor of broadcasting Alan Bloom (Sunland resident) was recognized as the CSU Faculty Honoree. Professor Bloom was the faculty adviser for this competition. An award-winning filmmaker and a Cal State L.A. Outstanding Professor, Bloom participated in the initiation of the Film and Video Festival as part of the CSU Summer Arts program in 1991, and was director in 1997 and 1998. The CSU Summer Arts Program was founded 14 years ago as a means of enriching the CSU arts programs and to give students the opportunity to work with industry professionals.
