| Cal State L.A. Celebrates Literacy and Math Competency at Year-End Carnival Los Angeles, CA -- On Saturday, May 12, 2001, the EPIC Office at California State University, Los Angeles will present "Cal State L.A., Here We Come," a year-end carnival celebrating the accomplishments of more than 600 children who completed this year's America Reads/America Counts Program. On the day of the carnival, the children and an adult from their family will be transported to the campus. Special fun activities will be available for the children, while educational workshops on literacy and math competency will be offered to the parents. Official certificates of participation will be presented to the children during the day's event. The America Reads Program--in its fourth year at Cal State L.A.--is a response to President Clinton's challenge for our nation to come together in addressing the issue of literacy in elementary schools. The America Reads Program works with students in grades K through 3, preparing them to read at grade level by fourth grade. The math component of this program, America Counts, was introduced last year, in order to improve math skills of children in fourth and fifth grades. The program at Cal State L.A. is currently working with eight different local Los Angeles Unified School District elementary schools. Those schools include City Terrace, Robert F. Kennedy, Hammel and Harrison elementary schools (located near the campus); Ann Street Elementary (near downtown Los Angeles); Loreto Elementary (north east of Los Angeles); Accelerated Elementary (near USC) and 99th Street Elementary (located in South Central Los Angeles).
