to be Acknowledged
at the Closing Ceremony for
Cal State L.A.'s
Project GEAR UP Summer Session

Marking the end of the first Cal State L.A. Project GEAR UP summer session, students who participated in the four-week long language arts intensive program will be awarded certificates. Dr. Ernest Moreno, the president of East Los Angeles College, will address the middle school students. Officials from Cal State L.A. will also be in attendance.

Project GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) at Cal State L.A. is an innovative Department of Education grant focused on preparing a greater number of students for college from low-income underserviced areas. The main focus of the program was a four-week language enrichment program. There was also an additional personal enrichment hour, and a physical education hour developed by specially trained staff and ELAC instructors.

Thursday, August 3, 2000, 2:00-3:30 p.m.

East Los Angeles College Student Center. The college is located at 1301 Avenida Cesar Chavez, in Monterey Park, one block west of Atlantic Blvd. exit, Pomona Freeway (60) on Atlantic Blvd. (north) to Avenida Cesar Chavez (south). Ample street parking is available in front of the college.

Consistent with Project GEAR UP's goal of preparing students for college beginning in middle school, the inaugural summer session consisted of a four-week language arts intensive providing a high quality developmentally appropriate program for students focusing on:
Experiences in abstract thinking
Creative ways to connect learned information
Opportunities to work collaboratively
The development of self-esteem through literature
