Distinguished Professor is Guest Speaker for the
1998 David L. Kubal Memorial Lecture Series at Cal State L.A.

The 1998 David L. Kubal Memorial Lecture Series at California State University, Los Angeles will present "Aesthetics and Cultural Difference: Our New Professional Challenge" by Emory Elliot, distinguished professor of English and director of the Center for Ideas and Society at UC Riverside.

Thursday, January 29, 1998, 4:30-6 p.m.

Cal State L.A. University-Student Union, Alhambra Room. The University is located at the Eastern Ave. exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Fwy., at the interchange of 10 and 710 Fwys.

Emory Elliot received his B.A. from Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland, and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. Elliot is the editor of The Columbia Literary History of the United States, The Columbia History of the American Novel, and the Prentice Hall Anthology of American Literature. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Council of Learned Societies.

He was the recipient of the 1988 National Book Award for the Columbia History of the United States and the 1997 Rosemary Schrarer Humanitarian Award.

The lecture series, honoring the late David L. Kubal, a member of the Cal State L.A. English Department faculty from 1968 to 1981, bring distinguished literary critics to the campus. Past lecturers have included noted scholar Mark Turner, prominent literary theorist J. Hillis Miller, culture critic Geoffrey Hartman of Yale University, noted Renaissance scholar Don Wayne, and literary editor Adolf Wood of Times Literary Supplement.
