The 2000 David L. Kubal Memorial Lecture Series at California State University, Los Angeles will present "Environment Matters: Ecological Feminist Theory and Chicana Literary and Artistic Expressions," by Maria Herrera-Sobek, Professor of Chicano Studies and Luis Leal Endowed Chair at UC Santa Barbara.

Maria Herrera-Sobek had taught at UC Irvine in the Spanish and Portuguese department, from 1975 to 1996, and prior to that at Cal State Northridge in the Chicano Studies department. She received her Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures at UCLA in 1975. She has been a visiting professor at Stanford University, Universidad de Alcala de Henares (Spain), and Harvard University. She has presented papers at international conferences in Holland, Spain, Slovenia, Mexico, and Canada, as well as throughout this country. She has received many distinctions and awards, among which have included honors for outstanding teaching. And, her scholarly productivity is no less than amazing. Aside from providing frequent service on advisory and editorial boards for academic journals and university presses, for consultations about films and books, and as a director of a rich variety of university programs and grants, she has authored three books, edited or co-edited 12 books, published 93 articles or book chapters and 12 book or film reviews, and presented papers at more than 180 national and international conferences. Moreover, as a published poet, she has given more than 20 poetry readings.

The lecture series, honoring the late David L. Kubal, a member of the Cal State L.A. English Department faculty from 1968 to 1981, brings distinguished literary critics to the campus. Past lecturers have included noted scholar Mark Turner, prominent literary theorist J. Hillis Miller, culture critic Geoffrey Hartman of Yale University, noted Renaissance scholar Don Wayne, and literary editor Adolf Wood of Times Literary Supplement.
