Cal State L.A. Students Win First Prize
for Engineering Research Paper
Los Angeles, CA Â Four Cal State L.A. students recently took first place in a research paper competition sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
Industrial technology majors Long Diep (Rosemead) and Juan Villanueva (Los Angeles), and mechanical engineering majors Chris Reid (Pleasanton) and Akilesh Vedartham (Los Angeles) were recognized for their award-winning research, paper and presentation, ÂAdvanced Small Engine Design, at the Nissan North America Corporate Office in Gardena in May.
The research paper concerned the advanced small engine design that was used to develop the CSULA SAE award-winning Supermileage engine. The award included a grand prize of $750 for the students and a Mac Short Memorial Plaque to be displayed at the winning institution for the following academic year.
The students were mentored in their research, paper and presentation by James E. Ettaro (Alhambra), associate professor of technology and faculty advisor for the CSULA SAE student organization. This is the fourth time since 1950 that Cal State L.A. students have won this award. Previous winners were Sheldon Ossoff in 1963, Michael Izumi in 1978, and Charles Johnson and De San in 2003.
The Mac Short Engineering Paper Competition is an annual competition for SAE student members currently enrolled in local colleges and universities to showcase their research abilities in mobility engineering and technology. The competition consists of an oral presentation and a written engineering paper on the same topic as the presentation. Experts form local automotive and engineering companies serve as judges for the contest.
