Cal State L.A. Broadcasting Professor
Garners Media Production Award

Los Angeles, CA – Ivan Cury (Encino resident), professor of broadcasting at Cal State L.A., was recently selected as the recipient of this year’s Rosebud Award, a CSU systemwide award presented to an outstanding member of media production. The award ceremony will be held at the CSU Summer Arts 13th Annual Media Arts Festival at CSU Channel Islands, Nov. 15, 2003.

Professor Cury has considerable experience behind the camera as well in front of it. He has produced and directed commercials for The Men’s Warehouse, and directed such productions as The Young and The Restless, Nashville Remembers Elvis, and Infatuation. Cury has also worked as a director and producer for CBS (Channel 2) and for NET (National Educational Television), and as a director for a number of series for NBC (Channel 4).

Additionally, Cury has directed numerous regional and national Emmy Award-winning productions, as well as several regional Clio award-winning commercials.

A Cal State L.A. faculty member since 1990, Cury received his B.F.A. in theatre arts from Carnegie Mellon University and M.F.A. from Boston University. He has previously taught courses in television production at UCLA and at Loyola University. Cury is a directing member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and has been a member of the New York ATAS Board of Governors.

“Cury has created many groundbreaking and innovative opportunities for [Cal State L.A.] students,” said Alan Bloom, professor of broadcasting, in a nominating letter. Bloom stated: “[Cury’s] ‘-Isms’ Project, funded by the Ford Foundation, allowed him and two other faculty members to work collaboratively to explore diversity on the campus and in the community through the use of personal video expression. …His students [also] produced the weekly Arts and Entertainment newmagazine for cable broadcast, and he worked with a broadcast journalism faculty to create a new student show for LA36, the city’s cable channel.”

Cury is currently working on the series, “DVD on TV,” for the FX Network, a groundbreaking show that makes use of a real-time computer generated virtual set that moves and interacts with the talent. Cury’s book, Directing for Television: A Format Approach, is in its second printing of the second edition and is used on campuses worldwide. His second book on television advertising is expected be published by next year.

The Media Arts Festival was established in 1991 to give talented students studying film, video, and interactive media within the 23-campus CSU system an opportunity to present their work for critical review. In 2000, the Media Arts Festival expanded its mission to include helping students of the CSU bridge the gap between student and working professional. In an effort to realize its expanded mission, the Festival now includes three days of seminars and events geared to helping students of the CSU become better prepared to work in the entertainment and media industries. In 2000, the Festival also began recognizing the outstanding faculty of the CSU with a Rosebud Award for service to the students of the CSU and noteworthy professional accomplishment. Prior honorees include Cal State L.A.’s professor of broadcasting Alan Bloom (2001).
