senior midfielder Diane Garcia (Montebello, CA/Schurr) and menÂs soccer redshirt freshman forward Morten Marthinsen (Oslo, Norway) have been named the Brine/CCAA MenÂs and WomenÂs Soccer Players of the Week, it was announced this morning by the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Garcia led the Golden Eagles last weekend to a pair of wins to open the 2004 season as Cal State L.A. defeated Notre Dame de Namur on Friday, 3-1, followed by a 2-1 victory over Pace on Sunday. In SundayÂs win over Pace (an NCAA Division II school located just north of New York City), Garcia tallied Cal State L.A.Âs first goal of the game and assisted on the game-winning goal midway through the second half.
Also on Sunday, Marthinsen had a five-minute stretch that all soccer players dream of as the Cal State L.A. menÂs soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 5-3 decision over Bryant (an NCAA Division II school located in Rhode Island).
Marthinsen tallied his first goal of the game at the 18:05 mark of the first half. He found the back of the net again at the 21:03 and 23:25 for a hat trick within a span of 5 minutes and 20 seconds. Marthinsen proceeded to set the CSULA single-game record with his fourth goal of the contest, the last one coming at the 41:43 mark to give him four goals before halftime.
The Cal State L.A. menÂs and womenÂs soccer teams are back in action this Saturday, September 4. The CSULA men host Fresno Pacific at 1:30 p.m. while the women host Northwest Nazarene at 4 p.m. Both matches will take place at Jesse Owens Track on the CSULA campus.
