Social Work Policy Summit to address how changes in legislation will impact California’s vulnerable populations
WHAT: To address critical changes in California’s social welfare policy that may
drastically impact children, women, families and the elderly, Cal State L.A.’s School of
Social Work will host the Social Work Policy Summit on Friday, May 20, from 8 a.m. to 3
p.m.
SUMMARY: The Summit will feature three panels that will discuss the negative impact
of ending state and federal programs, and how legislation, such as Assembly Bill 12, will
continue to harmfully affect these vulnerable groups and have reverberating effects across
all elements of society.
Participants will also provide insights into social policy and social justice, the economy,
mental health, child welfare, education, labor, and gerontology as well as an opportunity
to connect with practitioners and academics who are experts in these and related topics.
The Summit will also feature a discussion on strategies to preserve quality care and
services to the community in the face of diminishing resources.
WHO: Keynote speaker: Michael D. Antonovich, mayor, Los Angeles County Board of
Supervisors and long-time social welfare advocate.
Host: Christine Devine, television news anchor, FOX 11 News.
Panelists include:
Marvin J. Southard, director, Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health;
Mitch Mason, division chief, government relations, Department of Children and Family Services;
Susan Mandel, president and CEO, Pacific Clinics;
Rhelda Shabazz, deputy director, Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.
