Cal State L.A. Forum Focuses on Gang Members Working for Peace

Los Angeles, California -- January 09, 1998 -- On Thursday, January 29, at 12 noon, the Center for Student Life at California State University, Los Angeles will present "The Truth About the Truce: Gang Members Working for Peace, Then and Now." The forum, which will be held at Cal State L.A.'s University-Student Union, Los Angeles Room, will discuss the need for communities to address gang violence and the conditions that contribute to gang formation.

Among the invited panelists are former gang members who took leadership in establishing truces in their respective communities, project directors who provide services to former gang members, and experts on gang violence. Panelists include ex-gang members Dewayne Holmes, who was responsible for initiating the Watts truce in 1992, and "Blinky" Rodriguez, who has been active in promoting peace in the San Fernando Valley. Also on the panel will be Gilbert Sanchez, director of the Gang Violence Bridging Project, part of the Edmund G. "Pat" Brown Institute at Cal State L.A.; Steve Teixeira, director of Student Support Program; and Ali Modarres, professor of geography and urban analysis and director of the Applied Research Program, also part of the Pat Brown Institute at Cal State L.A.

During the event, Dewayne Holmes and "Blinky" Rodriguez will be presented honorary awards in recognition of their efforts and accomplishments. The program will conclude with a reception following the forum.
